An ugly win is a better than a pretty loss as UCSB escaped with a 55-54 home victory over last place UC Riverside in a Big West Conference game.

Alan Williams was just 6-for-21 from the field but he made two big baskets in the final 1:05 of the game to help UCSB hang on and improve to 8-3 in league and 17-7 for the season.

Williams finished with 19 points and 15 rebounds as UCSB remains one game back of conference-leading UC Irvine. The Gauchos host Cal State Fullerton on Saturday at 4 p.m.
