Mother Nature could not hold UCSB back any longer. Tyler Kuresa smacked a 3-run homer and four Gauchos pitchers combined to allow just one run with 12 strikeouts in a 5-1 season-opening home win against Cal State Bakersfield.
UCSB was suppose to begin the year with a highly-anticipated series with powerhouse North Carolina State but weather back east cancelled the three games.
Dylan Hecht was credited with the win after allowing just one run in four innings with six strikeouts. Hector Lujan threw three outstanding innings of shutout relief with five strikeouts. Greg Mahle and Dillon Tate each pitched a scoreless inning as well.
Catcher Jackson Morrow was reached base in all four of his plate appearances with two hits and two walks. He scored two runs as the Gauchos made the most of their six hits in the contest.
UCSB travels to San Jose State to begin a three-game series on Friday.
