UC SANTA BARBARA, Calif. -

Most college basketball teams want to play as long as possible, not the Gauchos. UCSB elected to end their season rather than play in the postseason.

On Sunday UCSB declined invitations to both the College Basketball Invitational and the College Insider Tournament.

In a statement, head coach Bob Williams said in part, "UCSB basketball is honored to have been invited to play in postseason tournaments but at this time, the decision was made to give stronger attention to other priorities within our program." Williams declined to say what those priorities are but did say the decision was not based on money.

UCSB was routed in the first-round of the Big West Conference Tournament by rival Cal Poly 69-38. Gauchos star Alan Williams said after that game that he would want to play in the postseason to get "the bad taste out of their mouth."

It's a disappointing end to an otherwise solid season that saw the Gauchos win at UNLV, beat Cal and finish 21-9.
