Free agent minor league right-handed pitcher Joel Pineiro, who was recently released from the Los Angeles Angels' Triple-A team, received a 50-game suspension for a banned substance, the Office of the Commissioner of Baseball announced Monday.
The league said Pineiro tested positive for Heptaminol, a prohibited stimulant in violation of the Minor League Drug Prevention and Treatment Program.
Pineiro, 35, was once a mid-rotation starter for the Seattle Mariners, St. Louis Cardinals and Angels. He hasn't pitched in the majors since 2011.
He had a 7.48 ERA in four starts at Triple-A Salt Lake City and was previously released from Double-A by the Chicago Cubs this season.
