The Seattle Mariners activated right-hander Hisashi Iwakuma from the disabled list and is scheduled to make his season debut Saturday against the Houston Astros.

Iwakuma, who placed third in the American League Cy Young Award balloting last year, sustained a strained ligament in his right middle finger in January.

Iwakuma did not have surgery but was shut down from throwing for more than a month, before having bullpen sessions and simulated games. After tossing four innings in a minor-league rehab assignment with Triple-A Tacoma last Sunday, the Mariners decided to debut him Saturday.

In 2013, Iwakuma went 14-6 with a 2.66 ERA in 33 starts.
