LOS ANGELES, Calif. - Kevin Gowdy could be sidelined until 2019 after undergoing Tommy John surgery on Tuesday in Los Angeles.
The former Santa Barbara High School star pitcher was selected in the second round by the Philadelphia Phillies in the 2016 Major League Baseball Draft. He did not pitch in a game this year due to various injuries.
Gowdy has pitched just 9 innings of rookie ball since being drafted.
Following surgery Gowdy said on his Instagram, "Made a new friend today. It's John, Tommy John." Thankful for all the struggles because they make the successes that much sweeter. I couldn't have a better support system behind me and the Road to Recovery starts now!"
Gowdy turns 20 in November.
