CARPINTERIA, Calif. - Carpinteria High School boys soccer becomes the first Santa Barbara County team to win both a section and regional title in the same season.
The Warriors made history by beating Rubidoux of Riverside 4-2 to capture the CIF State SoCal Regional Division V Championship in front of an estimated 1,000 fans who sat in a steady rain at Carpinteria High School.
Last week Carpinteria beat Rubidoux 3-2 in overtime to win the CIF-Southern Section Division VI Championship.
The Warriors snapped a scoreless tie just before halftime as Solomon Noohakaika fired a shot that deflected off a Falcons defender and went in the goal in the 40th minute.
Carpinteria increased their lead to 2-0 off a set piece in the 53rd minute. Off the corner kick Vincent Gonzalez scored on a header,
But the Falcons stormed back off of a couple of free kicks by Rafael Arroyo. In the 58th minute his shot skipped off the wet grass and into the net to cut the Warriors lead to 2-1.
In the 69th minute Arroyo struck again as his free kick was a rocket and the Falcons had tied it at 2.
But Carpinteria answered almost immediately as one minute later, Jose Jimenez squeezed in a shot just inside the goal to give the Warriors a 3-2 lead.
The Warriors finished off the scoring as Gabriel Barajas entered the box and beat the keeper and the celebration was about to begin.
The Warriors end the season with a CIF Double Championship.
