SANTA BARBARA, Calif. -

Basketball has connected Santa Barbara natives David Bregante and Sal Rodriguez for over 50 years. The "old guys" can still coach. Bregante is the current head basketball coach at Santa Barbara High School while Rodriguez is the bench boss at Laguna Blanca High School. Both teams are playing road CIF semifinal games.

They played against each other in the early 1960's when Bregnate was at Santa Barbara High School while Rodriguez was leading the Royals at brand new San Marcos High School. In 1963 they were teammates at Santa Barbara City College and they have stayed close throughout the years.

They coached together for several years as their sons played on the same youth team. Those sons Joseph Bregante and Bo Rodriguez are now assistants for their dads.

They will be rooting for each other once again as Santa Barbara plays at Oak Park in a CIF Division 3A semifinal game while Laguna Blanca has a CIF Division 6 semifinal date at Trinity Classical Academy.
