SANTA MARIA, Calif. - A garage transformed into living quarters at a home near Santa Maria went up in flames Thursday afternoon. Fortunately, there were no injuries.

Fire crews from the Santa Barbara County Fire Department and the Santa Maria Fire Department were dispatched to the 2000 block of Briarwood in the Santa Maria Valley just before 1 p.m. for reports of a structure fire.

What they found when they arrived on scene was a single family home with smoke coming from the garage area. Firefighters were able to put out the blaze in 20 minutes by mounting an aggressive attack.

The fire was contained to the garage. All of the homes occupants, three people and two pets, were able to get out of the home safely. No injuries were reported, however, a breathing support apparatus was requested by firefighters.

Crews spent time ventilating the house, mopping up, and trying to salvage any undamaged items.
