SANTA BARBARA COUNTY, Calif. - Fire crews were called out to a brush fire that broke out on a hillside at about 5:30 p.m. on U.S. Highway 101 just south of El Capitan State Beach.
The fire shut down the No. 2 traffic lane creating a traffic backup, according to the California Highway Patrol.
CHP said on their Twitter page that the freeway lane will remain closed until the fire is contained.
Santa Barbara County Fire Capt. Dave Zaniboni told a Noozhawk reporter that there were three separate spot fires, the largest being approximately 200 x 200 feet. Firefighters were able to stop the fire's forward progress just after 6 p.m.
The cause of the fire is under investigation but Zaniboni believes a passing vehicle is the possible cause. No injuries were reported.
