OJAI, Calif. -

Ventura County Sheriff's detectives tracked down and caught an alleged identity thief.

Jacob DeGrande, 46, of Ventura faces a long list of criminal charges connected to a string of mail thefts.

Investigators said he would steal the mail from homes in Santa Maria, Santa Barbara, Fillmore, Santa Paula, Ojai, Thousand Oaks and possibly other communities.

DeGrande would allegedly steal the checks, forge them and make fraudulent transactions at local stores.

The investigation started in July when a resident of Ojai reported being the victim of mail theft. The victim discovered four separate personal checks had been stolen from his mailbox. Those checks were later forged and cashed at different stores in Thousand Oaks, Ojai, Ventura and Oxnard.

Detectives from the Ojai Sheriff's Station obtained video surveillance from a few of those stores which showed the suspect.

On August 2, deputies on patrol in Ojai spotted the suspect in the video in a hotel parking lot and took him into custody.

Deputies identified the suspect as Jacob DeGrande. They said he had several hundred pieces of stolen mail, checks and material to reproduce checks including a portable photocopier and blank check paper in his possession.

Investigators are looking into the extent of his crimes.
