Ventura County Enforces New Requirements to Make Fireworks Shows Safer

Ventura Enforces New Fireworks Safety Requirements

VENTURA, Calif. - The Fourth of July will be safer in Ventura County this year.

Last year 28 people were hurt at the professional fireworks show in Simi Valley.

"What had happened was there was a faulty product.  One of the actual shells that was loaded into the mortar, and that product actually exploded within the motar and then set off all of the other fireworks around it, igniting that entire show on the ground," said Capt. Mike Lindbery, with the Ventura County Fire Department.

Last year in Ojai an operator was injured while lighting one of the shells by hand.

Since the accidents the Ventura County Fire Department has implemented new safety requirements.  They include: no longer allowing hand-fired aerial shows, increasing the distance between the shells and the public, and limiting the number of fireworks on each rack.
