Ventura County Animal Services flooded with pets after holiday

138 cats and dogs turned in

Ventura County Animal Services...

CAMARILLO, Calif. - Ventura County Animal Services are in a "state of emergency" following Fourth of July after more than 100 cats and dogs made their way to the shelter.

Fireworks and loud noises scared the pets into running away from home. Some of the dogs jumped out of windows, while others jumped over fences. While the intake rate is less than last year's holiday, the shelter remains busy.

“This is the busiest time of year. We brought in about 110 cats and dogs," said Randy Friedman, marketing director for Ventura County Animal Services.

Between July 2 to July 6, 88 dogs and 46 cats were turned into the shelter. Since then, 28 dogs and 5 cats were returned to their families. In most cases, these pets were not microchipped and did not have proper I.D. tags.

“The game changer is microchips. First the spay and neuter, obviously, to lower the number of animals that are homeless in the county. With microchips, it’s an amazing sound when you scan a dog or cat and there’s a beep and phone number so we can call and make that reunion," said Friedman.

Each time an animal gets brought into the shelter their photo is taken. Within minutes, the photo is posted on the shelter's website and mobile app.
