SANTA PAULA, Calif. - The Ventura County Sheriff's Office is investigating an officer-involved shooting that left one man dead early Sunday morning.

At around 6:20 a.m., Santa Paula police responded to a call of a suspicious person holding a knife in the area of East Palm Avenue and Ventura Street.

Officers arrived and located the person, later identified as a 36-year-old Santa Paula resident. His name has not yet been released.

A shooting then occurred. It's unknown what sparked the officers to open fire on the man, but the Santa Paula Police Department says the 36-year-old was armed with a knife when officers confronted him.

"I don’t know what transpired between the subject and the officers, but I do know that he was armed with a knife it is described as a kitchen type knife,” said Sgt. Denise Sliva with the Ventura County Sheriff's Dept, "I don’t know how many times the subject was shot, and the preliminary investigation indicates one officer was involved in the shooting."

The man was critically wounded at the scene and died from his injuries.

Santa Paula Police Department requested Ventura County Sheriffs Majors Crimes Unit to assist with the investigation. Ventura County sheriff will be the lead agency involved in the investigation.

Sheriff's officials say there are no outstanding suspects or threats to the community.

No officers were injured in the shooting.

East Palm Avenue and Ventura Street was closed most of Sunday while sheriff’s investigators analyzed the scene.

As of Monday evening, the officer/officers involved in the incident had yet to be identified.
