SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - Gang Injunction opponents outnumbered supporters at a public hearing before the first Santa Barbara City Council vote.
During a couple hours of public comment, Santa Barbara City Council members only heard from one person in favor a proposed gang injunction.
Despite the public outcry the council voted 5-2 to defend the injunction in court next month. Only Cathy Murillo and Gregg Hart spoke out against the injunction that they believe has cost the city and police department at least $600,000 since 2009.
The gang injunction would be like a restraining order on 27 named defendants. Opponents are worried it will cast a wider net and impact the families and friends of the defendants, too.
A lawsuit to dismiss the injunction will ultimately be decided by a judge.
The trial will begin May 5.
