Off-duty Oxnard firefighter steps in to help during Vegas mass shooting

Offduty Oxnard firefighter steps in...

OXNARD, Calif. - An Oxnard firefighter is being hailed a hero after he helped aid victims during the shooting in Las Vegas.

Jino Amparan, a 22-year veteran of the Oxnard Fire Department, attended the Route 91 Harvest Festival with his girlfriend but never expecting to use his skills as a firefighter during his time off.

Amparan and his girlfriend stayed behind to help three people who he remembers as Austin, Keith and Kathy.

Amparan said that while Kathy and Keith survived, Austin didn’t.

“About that time, I saw his wife or girlfriend and she just said thank you. She asked who I was and I told her I was someone helping,” said Amparan. “I think that is all is said I really don’t recall she got in the car with him and that was the last I saw of him.”

Amparan said his instincts as a firefighter kicked in but it was a team effort that helped in the chaotic situation.

KEYT's Alex Biston will have a full report tonight at 5:00 and 6:00 on NewsChannel 3 including more of her interview with Amparan. Check back later today for updated information and additional content.
