Dry Brush Quickly Burns in Planned Burn

VENTURA, Calif. -

The Ventura County Fire Department is doing what it can to increase protection against a wildfire.

On Thursday, nearly 80 firefighters participated in a planned burn. During the burn they destroyed more than 22 acres of dangerous dry brush.

The burn took place in the Ventura Foothills, just north of the city of Ventura and west of Santa Paula.

"What we're doing is were burning a lot of the brush out of these canyons.  We are starting with Barlow and Sexton Canyon to basically build a buffer for the city of Ventura.  We have had a couple of fires from this area in the past; including the Poli fire and the School Canyon fire," said Captain Mike Lindbery with the Ventura County Fire Department.

In the upcoming months the Ventura County Fire Department will be conducting several more planned burns similar to this one.
