Diesel Fuel Truck Catches Fire

Three people transported to the hospital

VENTURA, Calif. - California Highway Patrol released the following information Tuesday:

A traffic collision involving three vehicles caused a fire which resulted in the closure of two lanes on northbound Highway 101 at State Beaches on Tuesday just after 12 p.m.

Angang Ye, age 52, was driving a 2013 Toyota Camry traveling northbound on Highway 101 in the #3 lane south of State Beaches.

Ye was accompanied by a passenger, Fang Wang, age 33, both visiting California as tourists from China. Aidan Pulido Ruelas, age 45, of Santa Maria, was driving a semi-truck traveling northbound on Highway 101 in the #3 lane directly behind Ye's vehicle.

Kathleen Ridenour, age 66, of Moorpark, was driving a 2012 Chevrolet Equinox as she was traveling northbound on Highway 101 in the #1 lane. Ye suddenly slowed or stopped in the #3 lane directly ahead of Ruelas' truck. Ruelas attempted to stop and avoid a collision with Ye's vehicle but was unable to do so.

Ruelas' truck struck the rear end of Ye's vehicle and jackknife as it veered left across the northbound lanes directly into the path of Ridenour's vehicle.

Ridenour's vehicle struck the side of Ruelas' truck and both vehicles veered into the center divider. A fire erupted from the collision and fully engulfed both vehicles. Ruelas and Ridenour were able to exit their vehicle before the vehicles were engulfed by the fire.

Ridenour had to escape her vehicle through the rear lift gate since the other doors would not open due to the collision.  Ridenour and Ye were transported by ambulance to the Ventura County Medical Center where they were treated for minor injuries.

Northbound Highway 101 was initially closed for approximately 15 minutes while the fire department put out the fire.

The CHP eventually opened the #3 while the #1 and #2 lanes remained closed. The freeway was fully reopened at about 2:45 p.m.

The cause of the collision is under investigation.
