Aerial Firefighting Training This Week In Port Hueneme

PORT HUENEME, Calif. - The U.S. Forest Service is preparing for high fire season.

This week the California Air National Guard's 146th Airlift Wing and the U.S. Forest Service are practicing drills and training exercises with air tankers.

More than 100 people are participating in the training exercises this week at the Channel Islands Air National Guard Station in Port Hueneme.

This year's training is especially important because of the dry conditions our area is currently in.

"It has been a pretty dry year.  Three years ago, we had almost 39 inches of rain and that was a relatively busy season.  This year we have had almost no rain, and I am anticipating a large fire season", said Bill Wilson with the 146th Airlift Wing.

The aircraft they are using is the C-130J.  It can hold up to 3,000 gallons of fire retardant or water.

These aircrafts are used across the country depending on need.  Chances are they will be getting a lot of action this summer due to our continuing drought conditions.
