SANTA MARIA, Calif. -

Police are investigating a two car crash that happened on the 101 freeway near Los Alamos.

It happened around 7:30 on Tuesday night. A Saturn sedan traveling southbound on the 101 freeway crossed the center median and slammed head on into a Toyota Camry that was traveling northbound, according to the California Highway Patrol. 

The Saturn was able to act quickly and turn the car to the right, which caused less damage and possibly less injury said the CHP. 

The freeway was shutdown briefly. One driver was taken to Marian Medical Center in Santa Maria. The driver is expected to survive. 

The other driver was airlifted to Cottage Hospital with major injuries. Their condition is not yet known.
