Tsunami watch canceled for California coast

8.0 earthquake off Alaska coast

CENTRAL COAST, Calif. - Update: (4:33 a.m.) The National Weather Service has canceled the Tsunami Watch for the California coast.


Coastal communities along the Central Coast are under a tsunami watch following a preliminary 8.0 magnitude earthquake off the coast of Alaska.

The watch includes areas between and including the California/Mexico border to the Washington/British Columbia Border. The earthquake occurred at 1:30 a.m. PST 175 miles southeast of Kodiak City.

According to NOAA,  a 'watch' means to listen for updates and be prepared.

The Tsunami watch remains in effect until further notice. Watch areas may be upgraded or canceled as new information comes in.
