Special Olympics Santa Barbara County is looking for coaches.

The organization has more than 420 athletes, participating in 12 year-round league sports like basketball, soccer and track and field. To help get as many athletes as possible on the field, more coaches are needed for practices, games and to act as mentors.

"It's really important," volunteers manager Michelle Duke said. "The more coaches we get the more athletes we're able to get out there to practices and competitions."

Athletes are children, teens, and adults from Carpinteria, Santa Barbara, and Goleta.

A meeting is scheduled for Tuesday from 6-7 p.m. It is an informal gathering to provide more information about becoming a coach. If you can't make it the meeting you are encouraged to visit the West Side Neighborhood Center at 423 West Victoria St in Santa Barbara.
