If the year of your car is a 93 or older you can get a $1,000 check from the San Luis Obispo County Air Pollution Control District.
Each year, the Air Pollution Control District allocates grant funding to buy old cars. Just last month, it increased the incentive from $800 to $1,000. It also expanded the eligible age of the vehicles it takes from 1992 to ‘93 and older.
The voluntary accelerated vehicle retirement program has been operating since 2009 with the goal to get high-polluting vehicles off the road.
"1992 and older vehicles emit about the same as operating 100 clean new vehicles that are on the road today, like a 2013 car," said Aeron Arlin-Genet, of the air pollution control district.
In order to turn your car in, the vehicle must be registered in San Luis Obispo County for the past two years. It also needs to be operating.
Since the program began, more than 300 cars have been turned in. At this time, the district has enough funding to take in 200 more cars.
