One of the more unique events at a California mission took place at sunrise Wednesday in Santa Barbara. In virtual silence, and only the sound of an indigenous song on a flute, about 100 residents came to the Old Mission steps for the 'Time of Illumination' mass. Dennis Rickard was a well known figure amongst the Santa Barbara community and beyond. He served as the 2014 Old Spanish Days' El Presidente. His legacy is a rich one, one which involves the tradition and history that can only come from being the great-great-grandson of José de la Guerra, the proclaimed patriarch of Santa Barbara's first family. A highlight of Rickard's year-long duties as El Presidente was the showcase morning when Old Spanish Days was shown by way of an entry in the Tournament of Roses Parade January 1, 2015 in Pasadena. Rickard passed away on Sunday after battling a recent illness.
