Sgt. Mike McGrew retires after 31 years of service to the community

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - After 31 years on the force, Sgt. Mike McGrew with the Santa Barbara Police Department ended his watch Wednesday afternoon.

In a heartfelt tribute, Santa Barbara Police Department personnel stood in attention with many of the sworn officers saluting Sgt. McGrew as he walked out of the police station into a well-earned retirement.

From 1986 to 2017, Sgt. McGrew patrolled the streets of Santa Barbara and protected a community that embraced him making Sgt. McGrew a recognizable face in town.

His naturally calm voice and soft demeanor were no substitutes for bringing justice to the bad guys, which earned not only the respect of his colleagues but of an entire city.

A genuinely gentle soul, Sgt. Mike McGrew will be missed from the department along with his police motorcycle making traffic stops, conducting pedestrian enforcement, and answering dangerous calls that at times left battle scars. A true testament to his oath to serve and protect.
