SpaceX rocket launches successfully...

VANDENBERG AFB, Calif. - A Falcon 9 rocket blasted off at 5:37 a.m. Monday morning from Vandenberg Air Force Base. Base officials say it was successful.

The Rocket is carrying communications satellites for the Iridium Company which is building a global communications system that orbits the earth.

The Falcon 9 rocket launch is part of a series of launches for the Iridium NEXT program that involves putting ten, solar-powered satellites into orbit at a time.

Iridium says the NEXT program will be a second generation global communications system with applications for business, public safety and emergency services in times of natural disasters like hurricanes and earthquakes.

This is the fourth Falcon 9 launch from Vandenberg Air Force Base this year.

The rocket is built by the SpaceX Company, the brainchild of inventor, innovator and former tech tycoon Elon Musk.
