SANTA MARIA, Calif. - The Santa Barbara County Fire Department has scheduled a prescribed burn near Santa Maria in an effort to combat future wildfires.
About 209 acres near 5555 Santa Maria Mesa Road will be burned sometime before the end of October.
The current plan is for the burn to take place at around 9:30 a.m. on October 11 or 12, depending on weather conditions.
The prescribed burn could be moved if weather conditions are not favorable for dispersing smoke from populated areas.
It can be hard to tell which areas will be most affected by drifting smoke. Anyone in the area during the prescribed burn is advised to necessary precautions to protect themselves and loved ones.
