AVILA BEACH, Calif. - Pacific Gas and Electric has announced that Unit 2 at the Diablo Canyon Power Plant has been reduced to 50 percent power.
The reduction is necessary as part of planned maintenance to clean the plant’s intake tunnels, which are located on the non-nuclear side of the plant.
PG&E Senior Vice President Ed Halpin said in a press release, “Performing this work is squarely in line with our commitment to provide our customers with safe, reliable and affordable power. Our team will work throughout the week, and around-the-clock, to safely perform this work and then methodically return Unit 2 to full power."
PG&E says it is common for crews to clean the plant’s cooling water system components and to perform other scheduled maintenance.
Unit 2 will return to full power following completion of the work, Unit 1 continues to operate at 100 percent.
