SANTA MARIA, Calif. - For a long time the Skyway Center was just sitting in Santa Maria waiting to open.
Two businesses recently opened up their doors and a few more businesses will soon call the place home.
Now, the Skyway Center in Santa Maria is coming to life.
"It’s nice to have a shopping center that will be interactive for the community,” said Linda Greco, owner of That's Fetch.
The long-time Orcutt resident says when it came time to open up the new pet boutique with her daughter, staying local was a huge priority.
"When we came to the Skyway Center it just felt right,” Greco said.
The new center sits just off of Highway 135 and Skyway Drive.
Business owners said they hope the location will attract people driving by like Jayne Turner. She brought her dog Lulu in to That’s Fetch for grooming.
"It’s always nice if they are brave enough to open a business in California," said Turner.
Locals said it’s been a long time coming, they’ve waited for restaurants and stores to open up shop.
"I’m really excited we always go out of town for night life so anything new around here makes me excited,” said Taira Haskins from Orcutt.
The 30,000 square foot retail center is also home to Burgerim.
General manager Aries Guilfoyle said they serve up a variety of mini-burgers and already have a long line of customers coming back every day.
"It’s going to bring business and jobs here too,” said Guilfoyle.
It’s a boost for the local economy as shoppers are generating money and tax dollars back into Santa Maria.
"I would like more signs similar like the Crossroads tower so you can spot us off the 135,” said Guilfoyle.
More businesses at the Skyway Center will be opening in the near future including the Santa Maria brewery and a fitness studio.
