Beating the heat in Santa Maria

SANTA MARIA, Calif. - The Paul Nelson Aquatic Center has more swimmers than usual for its afternoon lap swim.

"Today I wouldn't have missed it for anything because it's so hot!", said swimmer Dona Biddle.

As temperatures creep towards 100 degrees, Biddle say it's one of her favorite ways to keep cool.

"Yesterday we were too chicken to come in the heat so we went at 6:00 p.m. and the pool is warm, it feels really refreshing in the evening so if you can't come at noon, it's open from 6-7:30 and it's wonderful," Biddle explained.

For customers at Doc Burnstein's Ice Cream Lab in Old Town Orcutt, they're looking for a reprieve as well.

Antonio Ibarra says he and his coworkers are working at a ranch up the road and needed some ice cream to keep them going the rest of the day, telling us: "Ice cream here it helps - it helps the body cool it down and it's enjoyable as well."
