LOMPOC, Calif. - A group of AIDS/LifeCycle riders were treated after coming into contact with tear gas along their route.
It happened around 11 a.m. Wednesday in front of the Vandenberg Air Office Base on San Lucia Canyon Road.
An event organizer says the tear gas was set off near the route as part of a training exercise by the Federal Correctional Institution in Lompoc and gusty winds blew the tear gas into cyclists.
Six bicyclists suffered eye irritation and were cared for by the on-site medical team.
One cyclist said that he heard two loud booms then within seconds he felt and smelled the gas. He said he and other riders became disoriented and tried to pull over as safely as possible.
The prison warden canceled the exercise immediately after hearing about the incident and apologized, according to a representative from the bicycle ride.
