SANTA MARIA. Calif. -

The price to have an animal spayed or neutered at the Santa Maria Valley Humane Society ranges from $60 to $200, depending on the size of the pet. Now dog-owners who live in Northwest Santa Maria will be able to get their pets spayed or neutered for $10 because of a $119,000 grant given to the humane society by PetSmart Charities.

Jaida Johnson hopes to be the next responsible pet owner. This sixth-grader says "if [animals] are on the streets just walking around they can get sick and have disease and die from it."

Jill tucker, executive director for SMVHS, tells KCOY-TV “when PetSmart focuses on a grant like this they are looking for maximum impact, so they want us to carve out a target community and ensure that we are spaying out a good percentage of those animals so that we can really make a meaningful impact."

Though the grant only focuses on dogs, Tucker is hopeful that pet owners will take advantage of this new deal that will make getting their dogs spayed or neutered more affordable.
