Sheared fire hydrant sends water shooting into the air in downtown Santa Barbara

Driver arrested on suspicion of DUI

Sheared hydrant damages business

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - Water shot dozens of feet into the air Saturday afternoon after a driver hit a fire hydrant on the 300 block of East Gutierrez Street in downtown Santa Barbara.

Water spewed from the sidewalk, flooding the street and causing a partial roof collapse at a nearby business.

Water could be seen pouring out of the front door of Santa Barbara Tile Encounters at 335 East Gutierrez Street.

The crash was originally reported as a hit-and-run. Police were able to eventually catch up with the driver, who was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence.

Fire crews and police officers assisted with the incident. Emergency responders had to deal with soggy conditions with the added danger of energized power lines in the area.

A city official red-tagged the building which means the building sustained major structural damage.
