ISLA VISTA, Calif. - A Santa Barbara City College student was seriously injured Saturday night after he fell 40 feet from a cliffside in Isla Vista.
Ambulance and Santa Barbara County Sheriff's deputies responded to the 6700 block of Del Playa Drive at around 10:30 p.m.
Deputies found a 19-year-old standing in Walter Capps Park -- which is fenced off to separate the public from the cliffs that overlook the ocean. He jumped over the fence and fell off the cliff and onto the beach.
Authorities responded to the area where the 19-year-old fell and found him unresponsive and face down in the rising surf. The victim was suffering from major head trauma.
As the water continued to rise, emergency responders had to move him to safety to provide medical aid.
The victim was transported to Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital with major injuries.
It's unclear at this time whether drugs or alcohol contributed to the fall.
