Santa Ynez Jogger Killed Was Goleta Post Office Employee

A man hit and killed while jogging in Santa Ynez last week has been identified as Ryuta Yamaguchi. Those who knew Yamaguchi are remembering him as a hard worker and avid surfer.

"Life's too short, he was 45 years old. He was doing his jog before he goes to work, does it everyday," said Debra Groshko, Manager at the Goleta Post Office.

It was supposed to be just another morning jog for Ryuta Yamaguchi. A routine he did everyday before work at the Goleta Post Office.

"He would run, come into work, do his job, then go home," said Groshko.

Last Friday, Ryuta never made it to work. He was hit by a mini-van, while jogging at the intersection of Refugio Road and Deer Trail Lane, less than a block away from his Santa Ynez home.

"He was just the friendliest guy that we had. Probably one of the best carriers that we had. It was an unfortunate accident," said Groshko.

The California Highway Patrol has identified the driver who hit Mr. Yamaguchi as an 89-year-old woman by the name of Grace Cota. At this time, no charges have been filed and officers believe it was an accident.

A makeshift memorial of flowers, candles and pictures has been set up to remember the Santa Ynez man, who loved life and surfing.

Authorities do not believe alcohol or speed played a factor in the crash.
