Santa Maria Bonita School District Hopes to Expand

SANTA MARIA, Calif.- - One of the largest school districts in Santa Barbara County  approved putting a $45 million bond measure on the November 2014 ballot. 

If approved by voters, the measure will fund classroom safety, renovation repair and construction projects including one new school. More than half the money will go toward building a new school.

Santa Maria Bonita district has 19 schools pre-kindergarten through eight grade ; 15 are elementary schools and four are junior high schools.

Maggie White, public information officer for Santa Maria Bonita school district said the school district is growing at a rate of 300-400 students per year. White said the growth is for a few reasons; affordable housing and a agriculture is among that list.

The school board has been discussing a construction bond for a few years and decided to put it on the November 2014 ballot.

In Santa Maria the average home has an evaluation of $190,000, so the average homeowner would pay around $50 a year in taxes if the bond is approved.
