SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - The corner of Chapala and Victoria streets in downtown Santa Barbara is now more bustling. The new Public Marketplace opened for business on Monday morning.
"The inspiration for this market was the public market in Madrid," said Marge Cafarelli, the developer of the public market and neighboring Alma del Pueblo.
For many of the 15 new local and regional businesses, this is their first store front, including for Green Star Coffee based out of Goleta.
"The public market is so unique and it's very cool and it has all these attractions. There are so many reasons somebody might come through here," said Daniel Randall of Green Star Coffee.
Customers can pick up freshly cut meats or homemade pastas. Some of the younger crowd at the friends and family soft opening on Sunday, enjoyed the sweet treats of ice cream and cupcakes.
"I think these cupcakes are the best cupcakes I ever had," said Collin Wells.
Enjoy Cupcakes is a husband and wife team based out of Los Olivos.
"We are so excited to be part of the public market. All of the merchants in here are so nice and are so dedicated to their individual crafts," said Kevin Vander Vliet of Enjoy Cupcakes.
"We have Crazy Good Bread Company. They have wonderful breads, baguettes, and pastries," said Cafarelli.
"This is an incredible opportunity to be part of all these phenomenal merchants and to be changing the experience of food in Santa Barbara. It's really fun," said Rossell Studer of Crazy Good Bread.
