Kelp, Boats Litter Miles of Sandy Beaches

Santa Barbara Beaches Still Cleaning Up From Storm

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - Santa Barbara's pristine beaches are still a mess following Southern California's first real storm in months.

From Leadbetter Beach to East Beach, miles of coastline are littered with kelp and seaweed. The Santa Barbara Parks and Recreation department will be clearing the sand over time.

Three boats are washed up on East Beach and waiting to be removed. Santa Barbara Harbor Management has contacted the vessel owners. Two of the three boats will be removed by the owner, the other will most likely be removed by the city.

"They're environmental hazards, people start crawling on them, they're safety hazards and they're eye sores," Harbor Manager Mick Kronman said. "We can't leave them on the beach too long."

Kronman says the whole boat-removing process should be complete by the end of the week.
