Results are in for the Santa Barbara election and the turnout was strong

51 percent cast a ballot

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - The turnout for Santa Barbara's vote by mail election was strong, with many ballots coming in during the last days of voting.

Cathy Murillo was elected Mayor to replace Helene Schneider.  Gregg Hart was reelected to the city council and two new members, Eric Friedman and Kristin Sneddon won in their respective districts.

The City Clerk's office presented the numbers to the council Tuesday.

The overall turnout was 51 percent.

85.7 percent of the ballots cast were received by mail.

In the three days following the election, 2640 ballots came in.  In recent years, a new law has allowed those ballots to be counted as long as they were postmarked on Election Day.

The new members of the council will take office in early January.
