Police say PVHS Handled Sex Assault Case Appropriately

SANTA MARIA, Calif. - Police tell NewsChannel 3 Pioneer Valley High School promptly came to them once they learned a high school teacher was probably having sex with a 16-year-old female student.

On Wednesday, the principal was notified by a source whom police won't name, but say is not the victim.

She called the Santa Maria Joint Union High School District around 5 p.m., and they called the Santa Maria Police Department.

Detective Sergeant Paul Van Meel says police worked the case right up to the arrest of the teacher, 53-year-old Brian Thomas Hook, the next morning.

They are impressed by the school's help, cooperation, and immediate response.

Hook is a social science and history teacher.

He also coaches girls' basketball.

Hook has coached at various high schools since 1983.

At this point, police don't have evidence pointing to other victims.

Hook is charged with three felonies of sexual acts with a minor, and awaits his first court appearance on Monday.

He is currently in jail on a $100,000 bail.
