LOMPOC, Calif. - Lompoc isn't kidding about their zero-tolerance policy for illegal fireworks; they've already handed out one hefty fine.
Four small bottle rockets cost a man a few cents each to buy, but a $1500 fine when police caught him last Saturday night.
Police won't reveal who it was but say when they approached him he threw the rest into the trash.
Police found the rockets and wrote him a ticket.
It's $1500 for shooting illegal fireworks, which are fireworks that launch into the air.
But even lighting what's considered "safe and sane" fireworks outside the July 4th 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. timeframe can cost $500.
Lompoc's mayor is afraid illegal fireworks will land on and set fire to homes.
Depending on the crime, he says fines can be as high as $50,000.
He has placed extra patrol on the streets specifically looking for fireworks.
