GOLETA, Calif. - The Islamic Society of Santa Barbara is currently building a mosque in Goleta after its previous center was damaged in a fire.
The new center is on a half acre lot at the corner of Los Carneros and Calle Real in Goleta. The society purchased the land in 2001 and its plan to build a mosque was well received by the city of Goleta in December 2013.
“That was a difficult time, but you deal with what you have to deal with. We had started this work well before that so it was a natural transition to move on and build on it," said Jamal Hamdani, Islam Society of Santa Barbara.
The mosque will be 6,500 square feet and have 2 stories. The first floor will include an auditorium, library, classroom and Imam studio. The second floor will include a peaceful place to pray.
Armstrong Associates is handling the construction.
“We build commercial buildings that will have to last for lifetimes. The quality that we put in and the detail we put in are geared towards those goals and accomplishments," said Earl Armstrong, owner and founder of Armstrong Associates.
A local design architect handled the plans and is working to make the center energy efficient.
“Any water that we use for hand washing or getting ready for prayer will go straight to our grey water tank and straight out to our trees because we like our trees to be big like the oak environment that we’re in," said Kenneth Mineau, Appleton Partners LLP.
The construction is currently underway. The development should be completed by summer 2018.
