Smoking age going from 18 to 21 in California

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - Buying smokes will soon be like buying alcohol.

Governor Jerry Brown signed a bill on Wednesday that will raise the legal age to buy tobacco products from 18 to 21.

The law aims to deter teen nicotine addiction. A report by the Institute of Medicine said 90 percent of regular smokers began using tobacco products before  age of 19.

A majority of Republican lawmakers in the state opposed the bill.

California is the second state to pass a law like this. Hawaii was the first.

The law takes effect June 9.
