Helicopter crashes near golf course

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - Emergency crews responded to a helicopter crash at La Cumbre Country Club golf course in the 4000 block of Via Laguna, an unincorporated area of Santa Barbara County Friday afternoon.

The incident was reported at 2:04 p.m.

Three occupants, a pilot and two passengers were onboard the helicopter at the time of the crash. All three self-extricated from the helicopter with the help of country club employees who also doused the flames with fire extinguishers.

An AMR ambulance took the victims, two men and a woman, to Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital with moderate injuries, said Santa Barbara County Fire Capt. Dave Zaniboni.

1,000 gallons worth of fuel were reportedly exposed due to a fire that broke out following the crash.

Smoke from the wreckage could be seen as far as Mission Street and U.S. Highway 101.

Zaniboni said the helicopter was a tour helicopter that had just left the Santa Barbara Airport.

They were apparently touring the Santa Barbara Harbor area and heading back to the airport when they began having engine trouble. The helicopter crash-landed on two cars in the maintenance area of the golf course, then burst into flames.

The FAA was informed of the incident and will be the lead agency in this investigation.
