SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - After weeks of watching and waiting, one of the two pregnant giraffes at the Santa Barbara Zoo is a proud new momma.
A Masai giraffe named Audrey went into labor Thursday afternoon. Two hours later, a baby boy giraffe was born. There is no name for the little guy yet. But zoo officials say he is more than 6 feet tall and healthy.
Giraffe births are rare and these land animals are endangered in the wild and in captivity. Experts say only around 90 Masai giraffes are in North America.
The Santa Barbara Zoo is expecting another bundle of joy at any moment. Betty-Lou, the other pregnant giraffe, is 15 months pregnant and past her due date.Giraffe gives birth to baby boy at Santa Barbara Zoo
