Fire crews respond to vegetation fire near Hope Ranch

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - Firefighters worked to put out a small spot fire that sparked in the Hope Ranch neighborhood of Santa Barbara Monday evening.

The fire was first reported at around 6:40 p.m. on the 4500 block of Vieja Drive.

The small spot fire was estimated to be about one-quarter acre and moving slowly through thick vegetation.

It was determined that the fire was sparked after a tree fell into a power line. The power line was still energized which forced firefighters to keep their distance while spraying the flames with water.

Southern California Edison was called in to assist with de-energizing the power line.

Santa Barbara County Fire Captain Dave Zaniboni said once the power line we de-energized, fire crews would be able to fully extinguish the fire and mop up hot spots.

Zaniboni said there was some potential for the fire to spread if winds picked up, but he did not expect that to be a problem.
