Explosive Device Found In Downtown Solvang, Evacuations Lift

SOLVANG, Calif. - Most of downtown Solvang was cordoned off after the discovery of a military ordnance near the business strip.

The item was found along the 1600 block of Copenhagen Drive at First Street just before 3:30 Wednesday afternoon. A reverse 911 went out to more than 1,000 residents in the area telling them to evacuate.  All hotels in the downtown area were also evacuated.

The evacuation area included a radius of 1500 feet from the device and included South of Laurel Avenue, West of Alisal Road, North of Birch Drive and East of 5th Street.

Sheriff's officials setup a command post at the Veteran's Hall..

The Red Cross also had a shelter at the Veterans Memorial Building at 1745 Mission Drive in Solvang to help evacuees. So many people showed up at the shelter, many people sat on the floor and waitied outside.

The Santa Barbara County Search and Rescue team helped with evacuations and military experts from Vandenberg Air Force Base were called in to assist.

Shortly after midnight, the sheriff's bomb squad and Vandenberg's EOD Team removed the device and  rendered it safe. Residents are now allowed to return home. Sheriff's officials are investigating  the device and how it ended up there.
