Demolition scheduled for Santa Barbara High's Peabody Stadium

Demolition scheduled for Peabody Stadium

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - The Santa Barbara High School Don's will have a new stadium in 2019.

Santa Barbara Unified School District officials and community members gathered at Peabody Stadium on Wednesday morning at 10:00 a.m. for a groundbreaking ceremony.

A plan to demolish and build a new Peabody Stadium has been in the works for 7 years. The original stadium was build in the 1920's and has been a gathering place for tens of thousands of people over the years. There are obvious signs of aging above and below the stadium.

The stands have rusted, cracked and in some places are crumbling. The asphalt track is also cracking and is not safe for athletes to run on.

The district is using private funding and taxpayer dollars from Measure I to pay for the $39 million dollar project. Once it's completed, the new Peabody Stadium will include a press box, weight room, a half-time room and grand stand. There will be artificial turf installed to replace the current grass field.

Gates will be put up around the stadium on Thursday and demolition crews will start working in September. The district hopes to have the stadium completed by April 2019.
