SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - A teenager accused of assaulting a UCSB police officer by hitting him with a backpack full of liquor bottles appeared in court for a second time this week.
Desmond Louis Edwards is suspected of sparking the Deltopia riot Saturday night in Isla Vista.
Edwards is charged with multiple felonies including mayhem, resisting arrest and assaulting an officer and special circumstances.
Prosecutors said the 17-year-old from Los Angeles is being charged in adult court because of the seriousness of the charges. If convicted of all charges, he could face up to a 12 year state prison sentence.
Members of his family were in court today. They are seeking a reduction in his $100,000 bail amount.
Edwards' arraignment was postponed until Monday morning. He is being held at a juvenile facility in Santa Maria.
The injured officer is recovering from a head injury that required stitches.
