SANTA MARIA, Calif. - The California Highway Patrol is stepping up enforcement throughout the Central Coast this weekend.
They want to remind travelers to be safe and cautious.
The CHP is asking drivers to keep a look out for unsafe traveler, keep a distance with other motorists and make sure to wear your seatbelt.
Last year during maximum enforcement the California Highway Patrol arrested more than 1,200 drivers over the Labor Day weekend nationwide.
Nearly 50 people were killed in car collisions.
CHP officer, Craig Carrier, said, "Tragically more than 75 percent killed within CHP jurisdiction were not wearing seatbelts. Seatbelts save lives, I've seen it first hand during my career where people had rolled over and been ejected. If they had been wearing their seatbelt they would've walked away with minor or no injuries."
